About the museum
The small half-timbered house next to the town hall is considered the birthplace of Johannes Kepler, who was born here on December 27, 1571. After more than 400 years of eventful history, the Verein Keplerhaus, predecessor of today's Kepler-Gesellschaft, acquired the building in 1938 and converted it into a museum under Max Caspar. It opened as the Kepler-Museum in 1940.
After a thorough renovation and redesign in 1999, the exhibition is devoted to Kepler's legacy as a co-founder of modern thought. Panels in German and English guide visitors through his stations, from childhood and studies in Württemberg, via Graz, Prague, Linz, Ulm and Sagan, to his death in Regensburg in 1630.
Original editions, facsimiles, letters, portraits and instruments from Kepler's time show his work, including the Rudolphine Tables, the Dioptrice and a model of the Mysterium Cosmographicum. An interactive computer simulation makes the planetary motions and Kepler's struggle with Mars easy to follow.
