About the museum

Kreismuseum Osterburg came about comparatively late: in 1935 the district of Osterburg left the joint museum association with Stendal and set up its own district local history museum. After initial shop-window exhibitions on Breite Straße, it moved into rooms in the former town school on Großer Markt; its focus was prehistory and early history as well as folk culture.

Towards the end of the war the holdings were put into storage. In 1953/54 the museum found a new home in the former business premises of the C. C. Bode company at Breite Straße 46 – a listed half-timbered building from the 18th century with outbuildings. Remains of a 10th-century castle complex survive in the courtyard.

The collection comprises around 25,000 objects, including about 3,000 archaeological finds, plus a specialist library on regional history. Exhibitions are devoted to the history of the town and district, Osterburg as a school town and asparagus town with the estate of asparagus breeder August Huchel, as well as crafts, agriculture, and linen production. In early 2024 the main building had to close for structural reasons; since then the team, parts of the collection, and exhibitions can be found at Platz des Friedens 3. A highlight of the year is the Osterburg Easter Market on Holy Saturday.
