About the museum

The Main Gate in Sommerach was built in 1585 by the Gerolzhofen master stonemason Georg Holzwarth as part of the town fortifications. It led to the Main ferry toward Dettelbach. After a lightning strike and fire in 1831, the gate tower was rebuilt at a lower height. For a long time the municipality rented the rooms out as simple apartments; the building was renovated in 1934 and again in 1984.

In 1985 the freelance artist Theophil (“Theo”) Steinbrenner from Schwarzach am Main leased the tower from the municipality and set up a small private museum in it, which opened in 1987. It displays bronze sculptures, watercolors, etchings and oil paintings from his work since 1969. The bronze Pietà above the archway, from 1988, is also by him. Steinbrenner died in 2018.

Alongside the permanent exhibition there were changing art shows and a cabaret stage: since March 27, 1987, concerts, readings, cabaret and dialect evenings have taken place in the tower – the first and oldest cabaret stage in the Kitzingen district, with more than four hundred events. According to the municipality of Sommerach, the Main Gate is currently not open to the public.
