About the museum
The Gsotthaber Hof was a fief of the Benedictine monastery of Tegernsee until 1803. The municipality of Rottach-Egern acquired it in 1960 and, after farming ceased, leased it to horse enthusiast Thomas Böck, who had already been collecting carriages, wagons, sleighs and agricultural and forestry tools from past centuries.
In 1999 the municipality bought this collection and, with expert advice, set up a museum showing rural life and the work of carters. The exhibition rooms on the first and second floors, as well as the barn, hold carriages and wagons of all kinds together with matching carting equipment.
The display recalls hard physical labor, the handling of horses and heavy loads, and nearly extinct trades such as carter, saddler, wheelwright and blacksmith. On show are, among others, a Tafelwagen, a governess cart, a Landauer mail coach from 1780 and a collection of sleighs, including elegant Gassenschlitten (street sleighs). Exhibits on rural customs complete the picture; some of the exhibitions change annually.
