About the museum

Former ski racer and two-time Olympic champion Markus Wasmeier founded an association in 1997, modeled on a Norwegian open-air museum, to rescue farmhouses in his Upper Bavarian homeland that were threatened with decay. Construction began in June 1999 in Neuhaus at the southern end of Lake Schliersee; the first three farmsteads were dismantled and faithfully rebuilt there.

The museum opened on May 1, 2007. Today more than 20 historic buildings from the Bavarian Oberland stand on around 60,000 square meters. They include the Riederhof, the first farmstead to be rebuilt, which with its original furnishings shows life around 1730; the Lukashof from the Tegernsee valley, completed in 1513, with an exhibition on electrification; the Behamhof from Agatharied; and the Wofen from Feldkirchen, which now serves as the museum inn with a show brewery. There are also craftsmen's houses, a chapel, an alpine hut, farm gardens and a bee house.

The museum sees itself as a living village: a blacksmith, shoemaker, carpenter, brewer and distiller demonstrate their crafts, old breeds of domestic animals live on the grounds, and festivals such as harvest festival, children's days and concerts take place throughout the year. The site is run by a company managed by Markus Wasmeier.
