About the museum
The collection goes back to the Neiderhell family: Sebastian Neiderhell senior has searched for and prepared fossils since the 1960s, and in the 1980s his son of the same name took up the hobby. Around the turn of the millennium the family decided to show the finds to the public.
In August 1999 construction began on the museum in the basement beneath the car park of the Neiderhell country inn. Sebastian Neiderhell junior largely carried out the interior fit-out himself, including the tiled floor, stairs, entrance area and display cases. On May 17, 2001, the Urweltmuseum opened to visitors for the first time.
Today it displays fossils and minerals on more than 460 square meters, from the Cambrian to the Ice Age. The pieces come from sites in Germany, such as the Altmühl Valley, the Swabian Alb and the Upper Palatinate, as well as from overseas. Many of them were prepared by hand over years.
