About the museum
MASKEUM in Kirchseeon (Ebersberg district) is the museum of the Perschten-Stiftung Kirchseeon. It opened in 2021 and gives the Perchten custom of Kirchseeon a permanent home. In Kirchseeon, the Perchtenlauf (Perchten procession) has been practiced again since 1954; it has been on the Bavarian state register of intangible cultural heritage since 2022 and was added to the nationwide register in March 2024.
The foundation is the first of its kind in Bavaria. Its goals are to preserve Perchten masks, costumes, instruments, and other equipment for the public, to acquire new pieces, and to secure the Perchtenlauf for the future. A friends' association has supported the museum since 2009.
In the museum, visitors learn about the background of the midwinter solstice custom and can see numerous Perchten masks up close. An app accompanies the exhibition with audio pieces, videos, 3D animations, and quiz questions. The museum shop sells books, collectible masks, and media about the custom.
