About the museum
The collection goes back to the 1970s, when the brothers Manfred Bergmeister and German Larasser began gathering wrought-iron grave crosses. Over the years, the holdings grew considerably.
In 2002, company founder Manfred Bergmeister decided to set up a private museum in the old workshop rooms of the Kunstschmiede Bergmeister in Ebersberg. The aim was to make the collection accessible not only to up-and-coming craftspeople but also to the public.
The oldest pieces are works from the early Renaissance, the newest are contemporary designs, so the museum presents about 500 years of grave culture and craftsmanship. It conveys the centuries-old symbolic language of grave crosses as a part of cultural history and at the same time as inspiration for today's design. The art forge also regularly restores crosses from its own collection and on commission from cemetery administrations and private individuals.
