About the museum

The museum's roots go back to the 1930s, when the Grafing master builder Bartholomäus Rieperdinger collected local history items. After his death, a working group for local history was founded in the early 1950s, which continued the collection and eventually handed it over to the town. In 1965 the Heimatmuseum opened in cramped rooms on the first floor of the town hall.

In 1971 the collection moved into a former workshop and farm building of the Rieperdinger property on Bahnhofstraße. The family's residential building, erected in 1871, had come to the town by inheritance in 1963 and initially served administration. After a careful renovation in which it regained its historic façade with divided-light windows and balcony, it was reopened in 2003 – on the 50th anniversary of the town's elevation to city status – as the "Museum der Stadt Grafing".

Today the permanent exhibition is spread across the main building and the rear building. In the main building, the focus is on works of art from the Romanesque to the Baroque, religious folk art, benefactors of the town, and above all the extensive collection of paintings and lithographs by the landscape and animal painter Max Joseph Wagenbauer, born in Grafing, complemented by works of the Lorenzenberger Künstlerkreis (artists' circle). The rear building is devoted to local history, furnished living spaces, and vanished crafts of the region.
