Specimens from the state natural history collections meet changing depictions of nature by three artists; until November 29, the cameraless photograms of Gregor Philipps are on view.
About the museum
The Müritzeum's roots go back to 1866, when Hermann Freiherr von Maltzan founded the Naturhistorisches Museum für Mecklenburg in Waren, named after him and the first natural history museum in what is now Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Since 1929 the collections and exhibitions have been housed in a former school building on the edge of the old town, into which the local history museum also moved that same year. In 1957 the two institutions merged to form the Müritz-Museum.
An important step in its development was the opening in 1982 of a public aquarium beneath the Herrenseebrücke bridge, which combined live animals from local waters with the natural history collections and the museum garden. Because both the aquarium and the old building needed renovation by the early 2000s, the idea of a new nature discovery center arose, backed by the district, the town and the national park authority.
First the historic building was renovated and reopened in 2006 as the Haus der Sammlungen (House of Collections); it houses the Naturhistorische Landessammlungen für Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (state natural history collections) with research rooms and a permanent exhibition on collecting and preserving. In summer 2007 the striking new building on the Herrensee followed: the Haus der 1000 Seen (House of 1,000 Lakes), with the aquarium landscape and interactive exhibitions on forest, moor, birdlife and the Ice Age. Since then the institution has operated as the Müritzeum and is one of the best-known destinations in the Mecklenburg Lake District.
