Pupils in the elective subject school history researched the teachers’ library established in 1869: where the books came from, what was lost, and how most of the collection was saved. On show in the Rathaussaal (town hall hall).
About the museum
The Stadtgeschichtliche Museum (city history museum) has been housed in the historic town hall on Neuer Markt since 1998. The building, dating from 1796/97, was remodeled between 1855 and 1857, raised by one floor, and given its typical neo-Gothic façade with turrets and battlements.
The collection was started in 1930 and documents the town's development from the first settlements to the present. The focus is on the lives of residents: everyday objects from agriculture, crafts, industry and club life, many of them from the Gründerzeit (the founding era). The preserved Ratswaage (council weighing scale), the Zelle des Bürgergehorsams (the former town jail) and historic work rooms show the history of the building itself.
A branch is the former tile works on Teschenberg, where stove tiles were shaped and fired from 1905 onward. The technical monument, with clay cellar, kiln and installed tile stoves, can be visited from May to September. The Museums- und Geschichtsverein (museum and history association) supports the museum's work.
