About the museum
The Muna Museum was established on the initiative of volunteer researchers in cooperation with the municipality of Grebenhain, as a place of remembrance, commemoration, and warning. It is dedicated to the Hartmannshain air munitions depot, which was built from April 1936 in the Oberwald west of Grebenhain and existed until 1945.
Up to 800 people worked there, and very few of them voluntarily: at first people subject to compulsory labor service from the surrounding area, and from July 1943 also foreign forced laborers. In March 1945, after an air attack on a munitions train, the site with its more than 120 bunkers was severely destroyed.
The permanent exhibition "1936–1945" covers the construction, infrastructure and end of the facility. The second exhibition, "1946–heute", covers the varied use of the site after the war, for example by industrial companies, a holiday camp, and from 1982 a NATO supply depot. A branch is located in a bunker on the former Muna site. The Förderverein (friends' association) also wants to counter myths and legends about the Muna and the Nazi period.
