About the museum

The museum's holdings go back to the elementary school teacher Karl Witt, who began collecting evidence of life and work in the Solling in the 1930s. After several interim locations, the city of Uslar set up the museum in 1966 in the Hattorfscher Hof, a Sattelhof (saddle-roof farmstead) built in 1677. In the 1980s the exhibition was redesigned as part of a museum education pilot project; since that time the museum has also regularly shown special exhibitions, often created together with local associations.

Today the museum quarter is spread across four renovated half-timbered buildings around an inner courtyard with about 1,000 square meters of exhibition space. The focus is on the everyday life of the people of the Solling: linen weavers, clay pipe makers, and cigar rollers, the Sollinger Eisenhütte (ironworks), the timber and furniture industry, and the often overlooked lives of farm women between household, children, and part-time farming. A separate section describes how refugees and expellees gained a foothold in the region after 1945, including through the example of the Buder glassworks.

A special feature are the funeral crowns from the chapel in Vahle, which are unique in northern Germany. Since 2015 the museum has also housed the Heimatstube (local heritage room) of the Heimatkreis Schlochau, with which the city of Uslar has a partnership. About 300 objects from the permanent exhibition can be viewed online on the portal Kulturerbe Niedersachsen.
