About the museum
Augusta Bender was born in 1846 as the sixth child of a farming family in Oberschefflenz. At 16 she left the village, fought for her education, worked as a telegraphist and teacher, and for 26 years traveled back and forth between America and Germany. Later she lived as a freelance writer in Baden and left behind poems, novellas, novels, autobiographical writings and a collection of folk songs.
The Literatur-Museum Augusta Bender opened in 2020 and is run by an association of the same name. It is located on the ground floor of a community hall built in 1847 in the center of Oberschefflenz, and it is one of the few literature museums in Baden-Württemberg dedicated to a woman.
The exhibition divides Bender's life into five stations, from her village home to her old age. Original works, poems, photographs and objects, as well as a timeline with drawers, deepen the themes; an intro film gives people of today a voice. Seven movable theme boxes on home, education, travel, women, animal welfare, songs and writing invite visitors to explore. In addition there are 19 storytelling places in the village.
