About the museum
The Königheimer Höflein was built in 1686 by the village mayor (Schultheiß) Johann Beucher, who was then the most prosperous citizen of Höpfingen. The courtyard house is today considered the oldest completely preserved building in the village. After the parents' death, the children split house and farm into two halves in 1723; this partition of the inheritance can still be seen in the building, which is divided in two, in the cellar with two entrances and in the divided front garden. The museum uses only the right-hand half of the house; the left half is still lived in by descendants of the builder.
The half of the house was lived in until 1991, in the 20th century with small-scale farming, livestock and subtenants, and during and after World War II also with billeted refugees and expellees. The municipality of Höpfingen then acquired the property, had it examined, restored and converted, and set it up as a local history museum together with the Heimatverein (local history association). Since 2001 the house has been the museum's main site.
The tour shows how a typical Höpfingen farm was furnished at the start of the 20th century, and uses the residents' history to tell the village's development. Other areas are devoted to self-sufficiency, livestock keeping and dairy farming in the stable and barn, and side-line crafts such as carpentry, wheelwrighting and cooperage. Themes that found no place in the farmhouse are presented by the Heimatverein in the museum storeroom in the attic floor of the old town hall.
