About the museum
The museum is housed in the Herrenmühle, a historic grain mill of the town from around 1700 on the edge of Hammelburg’s old town. Since its reconception in 2017, the house has presented the permanent exhibition “Brot und Wein” across about 1,500 square meters.
On the ground floor the theme is wine growing: Hammelburg is considered the oldest wine town in Franconia and looks back on more than 1,200 years of viticulture. Two further floors trace the path from grain cultivation in the fields through the life of the miller’s family and farmhands to the 20th century. They also explain milling technology, historical grain measures and scales, and the miller’s stand. The exhibition ends with bread and grain as foodstuffs.
Exhibits, staging and interactive media invite visitors to take part. Young visitors search for the “Museumsmäuse” (museum mice) in the house, and anyone who likes can slip into a miller’s outfit. Outside, the Museumsinsel (museum island) on the Fränkische Saale river includes a working millwheel and a Kneipp path along the millrace.
