Museum unter der Yburg
Local museum in a half-timbered house from about 1620 in Kernen-Stetten – with rooms on the Africa explorer Karl Mauch, old workshops, and winegrowing.
About the museum
The building on Hindenburgstraße in Stetten was constructed around 1620 by Johann Friedrich Thumb von Neuburg as a half-timbered house in the Franconian style. A stonemason's mark points to the master builder Michael Kern from Forchtenberg; inside, wall paintings from the time of construction and late Gothic details have been preserved. The municipality bought the house in 1978 and had it comprehensively renovated.
In 1987 the local museum was inaugurated there, and in 1989 it received its present name after the Yburg, which overlooks the village. It is run by the Verein für Heimat und Kultur Kernen im Remstal (association for local heritage and culture), founded in 1983, which collects, conserves, and archives objects on the history of Stetten and Rommelshausen and opens the house on a volunteer basis.
In September 2018 the museum reopened with a revised concept. The second floor is devoted to local history with the moated castle and Baroque palace, as well as personalities from Stetten – above all the Africa explorer Karl Mauch, but also the painter Andreas Friedrich Mochel and the engineering family Schlaich. On the third floor, a cobbler's workshop, a carpentry workshop, a bedroom, and exhibitions on cooperage, the wine trade, and flax processing have been set up. The first floor is used for special exhibitions, the vaulted cellar for small cultural events.
