Orgelzentrum Valley
One of the world’s largest organ collections, in the Altes Schloss Valley and the Zollingerhalle – open to visitors on guided tours and at concerts.
About the museum
The impetus came in 1983 from heritage conservator and musicologist Dr. Sixtus Lampl: to save the Romantic Koulen organ of Landshut’s St. Martin’s Church, built in 1912–1914, from being scrapped, he bought it himself. Since no place could be found to set it up, he and his wife Inge acquired the dilapidated Altes Schloss Valley, the oldest secular building in the district of Miesbach, in 1987, restored it, and established the organ center there.
Over the decades, this grew into a collection of more than 60 pipe organs, most of them fully preserved, many from churches and halls where they had been decommissioned – including Bavaria’s only large cinema organ, from the Capitol cinema in Heidelberg. Besides the castle, the ensemble includes a Baroque timber-framed barn from Oberdarching and a former sawmill hall built using the Zollinger system. Several concert-ready organs stand in this Zollingerhalle, whose wooden lattice structure creates distinctive acoustics.
To secure the collection’s future, the couple set up the Dr. Sixtus und Inge Lampl Stiftung foundation in 2021. An underground connecting structure completed in 2025 links the Altes Schloss, the Zollingerhalle, and the cinema organ hall and is intended to become the starting point for a future public organ museum, with support from the Deutsche Stiftung Denkmalschutz. Inge Lampl died in December 2024 and Sixtus Lampl on September 18, 2026; the foundation is continuing the guided tours, concerts, and cultural trips.
