About the museum

The Palais für aktuelle Kunst (PaK) is an exhibition venue for contemporary art at the harbor of Glückstadt. It is run by the art association of the same name, which Glückstadt citizens and artists founded in 2000. The association invokes the cosmopolitan founding idea of the town from 1617 and makes its exhibitions freely accessible under the guiding principle "Kunst für alle" (Art for All).

The building is one of the few surviving Renaissance palais in the town. It was built in 1630/31 in the style of the late Dutch Renaissance and was remodeled in the Baroque style toward the end of the 17th century. Because of a Latin inscription it is also known as the Palais "Quasi non possidentes." From 1700 to 1752 the government chancellery was housed here; later high officials, jurists and merchants lived in the house. In 1985 it was restored with urban development funding; inside, among other things, Baroque stucco ceilings are preserved.

Across about 500 square meters, the association shows three to four exhibitions each season with works by established and young artists, often from northern Germany. There is no collection with a permanent exhibition. Accompanying events include tours, artist talks, concerts, readings and the open discussion format "Kunst Sprech Stunde."
