About the museum
The Römerkeller in Oberriexingen belongs to a villa rustica, a Roman farmstead that about 1,800 years ago grew grain, fruit and vegetables in the fertile Enz valley and kept cattle, pigs, goats and chickens. Such estates emerged between the late 1st and early 2nd century AD outside the villages, in the midst of their fields, and generated surpluses that were sold at markets or supplied soldiers on the Limes.
The museum is located in the basement of a single-family house on Weilerstraße. It combines the original preserved cellar of the farmstead with a modern exhibition room. The town of Oberriexingen runs it as a branch museum of the Archäologisches Landesmuseum Baden-Württemberg (State Archaeological Museum of Baden-Württemberg).
On display are original finds such as axes, plowshares, sickles and other tools of arable farming and livestock keeping, as well as cult images of rural deities. Four plow models from the Neolithic to the 20th century show how agriculture changed. In a hands-on area, replicas such as a grain mill, an oil amphora or cowbells can be tried out. There are also guided tours and hands-on activities about Roman rural life.
