Strich-Chapell-Zimmer

About the museum

Walter Strich-Chapell (1877–1960) lived and worked as a painter in Sersheim from 1904 until his death and is buried there. The municipality commemorates him with a memorial room set up in the municipal archive, in the so-called Steinhaus (stone house) of 1479.

From his estate, the municipality was able to acquire cupboards and chests of drawers with Art Nouveau inlay, which a Sersheim cabinetmaker had built to the artist's designs. In addition there are his colour chest, palette, brushes and other personal belongings, as well as a wrought-iron candlestick after a drawing by the painter. An old table with chairs from a neighbouring house invites visitors to sit and chat.

Paintings and lithographs hang on the walls; a series of colour lithographs, with which Strich-Chapell won a competition in Leipzig, is especially highlighted. With the prize money he bought the field in Sersheim on which he built his house.
