Neues Rundfunkmuseum Fürth – Haus des Hörens
Municipal broadcasting museum in the former Grundig headquarters in Fürth – currently closed for renovation and redesign.
About the museum
The impetus for the museum came in 1987 from an exhibition on the history of radio in the Fürth city archive, which built on the importance of the local consumer electronics manufacturers Grundig and Metz. The city council then decided to set up a museum of its own; the foundation was formed by devices from the holdings of Grundig and Metz as well as other collections.
The broadcasting museum opened in October 1993 in the stables (Marstall) of Schloss Burgfarrnbach. In 2001 it moved into the former administration building of the Grundig works in what is now the Uferstadt, which the city later bought. There it showed the development of radio and television, complemented by special exhibitions, events, and, from 2018, an experimental workshop.
In 2020 the city council decided on a complete renovation with an entirely new permanent exhibition; the museum closed in August 2021. After the groundbreaking in November 2024, an extension for education and a recording studio is being built alongside the energy-efficient renovation. Under the name "Neues Rundfunkmuseum Fürth – Haus des Hörens" (New Broadcasting Museum Fürth – House of Listening), the museum is in future to convey the cultural and social history of listening interactively. Since 2023 the collection has also included the world's largest collection of Grundig devices.
