About the museum
The SchichtWerk is the first museum of the municipality of Gilching. The association Zeitreise Gilching e. V. built the permanent exhibition over four and a half years of volunteer work on behalf of the municipality, supported by the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation and the Bavarian State Office for Non-State Museums. It opened in 2017 on the upper floor of the Wersonhaus. The name refers to the local chronicler Rudolf Schicht and also to the layers (Schichten) of archaeology.
The house itself was built in 1914 as a country house and bears the name of sculptor Jules Werson, who lived here from 1919. In 1981 the municipality acquired the property; later the rooms were used by, among others, social services, the registry office and the archive. The wedding hall in the house is still in use.
The content focuses on the transition from the late Roman to the Bavarian settlement in Gilching. The basis is significant finds such as the late Roman settlement in Weßling and the early medieval graves of the "Kiltis" in Gilching. Drawer systems make the layering of the soil visible and show how archaeologists work. Hands-on stations, video scenes and audio plays engage several senses.
