About the museum
The Ahaus school museum opened in 2002 and shows what school and lessons looked like ten, fifty or a hundred years ago. It lies in the shadow of Ahaus Castle, in one of the gatehouses on Sümmermannplatz. The exhibition was put together by former school principal Winfried Bergen.
The museum is run by the Heimatverein Ahaus von 1902 e. V. (local heritage association), which operates it entirely with volunteers. The collection includes items that pupils needed for learning in the 19th and 20th centuries, such as leather satchels, slates and styluses, school desks with inkwells, textbooks and pupils' exercise books in German script, official regulations, class photos, school uniforms and materials for general studies lessons.
Visitors of all ages can refresh their memories, leaf through old exercise books or sit at a historic school desk for a photo. A reconstructed classroom gives an additional impression of lessons in earlier times. Free guided tours are offered for school classes and groups.
