About the museum

The Torhausmuseum is housed in the left of the two pavilions at the entrance of the Baroque Ahaus Castle, which served for about four centuries as the summer residence of the prince-bishops of Münster. The city-run institution tells the story of Ahaus over more than 900 years: from archaeological finds of the first settlers to records of princely rule, which ended in 1803.

Shown are pictures and writings on the history of the town and castle, as well as medieval and early modern excavation finds. Among the special pieces is a parchment charter from 1538 documenting an almshouse in Ahaus. Many relics from the castle and its garden have also survived.

The museum was looked after for 25 years by two volunteers; the Heimatverein Ahaus (local heritage association) now handles unlocking, locking up and supervision, as it does for the school museum in the right-hand pavilion opposite. The opening hours have remained the same.
