About the museum
The Steinhauermuseum Mühlbach was set up in 1998 and recalls the era when quarries and the stonemason's trade shaped the village. It is housed in the former council and school building from 1903, built from Mühlbach Schilfsandstein (reed sandstone), itself a testament to the heyday of the trade. The museum was created in cooperation between the Eppingen Town and Half-Timbered House Museum and the Mühlbach local heritage association. For the exhibition rooms, a doorway was uncovered and the original condition largely restored.
Across 120 square meters, the permanent exhibition tells of the rapid rise of the quarries, from extracting the stone to processing it, and of the decline shortly after the turn of the century with its times of hardship. Numerous exhibits, a re-created stonemason's hut, and a scene from the Mühlbach quarry offer insight into the hard work and short lives of the stonemasons. Since the craft is still alive in the village, the offer also includes tours of active quarries, workshops and changing exhibitions.
