Ukranenland
Open-air museum on the Uecker river near Torgelow with a reconstructed 9th/10th-century Slavic village, a medieval castrum and traditional crafts.
About the museum
The idea for Ukranenland emerged in the early 1990s; in 1993 the association Ukranenland – Historische Werkstätten was founded, and it still runs the museum today. It takes its inspiration from the Ukrani, a Slavic tribe that settled along the Uecker and was first mentioned in 948 in the founding charter of the Diocese of Brandenburg.
Between 1995 and 1997 an early medieval village was built on the riverbank south of Torgelow, based on archaeological findings from the 9th and 10th centuries, with log, post and wattle-walled houses, a palisade and a landing stage. The open-air museum has been open to visitors since 1995. Replicas of historic boats are moored at the jetty, and groups can row them on the Uecker.
From 2000 onward a second area, the Castrum Turglowe, devoted to the High Middle Ages of the 12th and 13th centuries, was planned and built step by step; an exhibition there opened in 2013. The reconstructed ship Ucra rounds out the offering.
The core of the concept is experimental archaeology: staff in historical dress demonstrate crafts such as pottery, blacksmithing, bronze casting, weaving and leatherwork, and visitors can join in. School trips with overnight stays, project days and festivals such as the Easter festival, a knights' tournament at Pentecost and the summer festival in August with reenactment groups from several countries shape the year.
