About the museum

The water tower in Groß Lafferde, a district of the municipality of Ilsede, was donated by Kommerzienrat (commercial councillor) Friedrich Eduard Behrens, a native of the village. After construction from 1911 to 1913 it began supplying water in 1914 and remained in operation until 1954. The red brick base supports a black tower top; in total the tower rises about 31 metres.

In 1995 the local heritage and culture association Groß Lafferde set up a local history museum in the tower, with considerable fundraising and the active help of residents. In 2021 and 2022 the association renovated the interior of the building.

Since then the tower has presented, under the title "Das Mysticum", an exhibition on superstition, magic and medieval legal history. It covers belief in witches, the devil and demons, persecution by the Inquisition and, with numerous exhibits, the "peinliche Befragung" (painful questioning, i.e. torture). The museum is financed solely through donations and grants and is run by volunteers.
