Kreismuseum Peine
Museum of the district of Peine on the everyday, urban, and industrial history of the region, with a treasure hunt for children; free admission.
About the museum
After a museum festival marking the 100th anniversary of the district of Peine in 1985, the district's local history museum was founded in 1988. Previously, items from the archive and storage had only been on view in the corridors of the district administration building. The museum moved into the restored Glück-auf-Haus on Stederdorfer Straße, once the home of Peine town councilor Heinrich Köning; in front of the entrance stands the steel sculpture "Polumo" by the Hanover artist Breuste.
The collection grew out of the merged holdings of the Kreisheimatbund (district local history association) and the district and now comprises more than 25,000 objects. Its focus is on testimonies of everyday life in the Peiner Land, especially from the second half of the 20th century; works by the artist Hans Nowak form a collection of their own. The index cards are currently being digitized so that the collection can be accessed online.
On around 700 square meters, the museum shows how craftspeople, industrial workers, townspeople, and farmers lived and worked. Among the best-known pieces are a fully furnished 1922 Konsum shop from Stederdorf and a historic schoolroom. On the second floor, the newly designed area "Sugar, Steel, and Immigration" on the industrial and migration history of the region is being created. The permanent exhibition is complemented by temporary exhibitions, lectures, and programs for schools and families. Ulrika Evers directed the museum from 1988 to 2017; since 2017 Doreen Götzky has been museum director.
