About the museum
The Mylos tou Boni is a stone-built windmill of the 16th century and took its name from its last owner, the miller Georgios Boni. It came into the possession of the Laografiki Syllogi Mykonou (Folklore Collection of Mykonos) by purchase in 1962. Its mechanism, tools and equipment are on display. Together with the surrounding buildings linked to farm work, it forms an open-air museum.
The site makes clear how bread and wine were produced, the basic staples of the islander’s pre-industrial life. The miller’s little house is a necessary complement to the mill. The threshing floor, the wood-fired oven, the wine press, the dovecote and the well with a windlass are later buildings, added according to the vision of the founder of the Folklore Collection, so that visitors gain a full picture of the island farmstead as a self-sufficient economic unit. The ensemble is completed by the neighbouring twin churches of Agios Antonios and Agios Nikolaos. The site also offers a view of the town and the bay.
