About the museum
The Aegean Maritime Museum was founded by Giorgos M. Drakopoulos, a native of Mykonos, and his wife Ioanna, and has been operating since 1985. Its purpose is to research and present maritime history and the relationship of the Greeks with the sea from antiquity to the present. The museum is a charitable foundation under private law.
It is housed in a 19th-century Cycladic house in the centre of the traditional town of Mykonos, at the location Tria Pigadia. The rooms and the garden have been arranged to form a harmonious whole for the presentation of the exhibits, which are divided into indoor and outdoor displays.
The indoor exhibits include ship models, historical maritime documents, prints, maps, ancient objects and a rare collection of ancient coins with naval images. In the garden are displayed the original mechanism of the Armenistis Lighthouse, grave stelae, nautical instruments and tools. The museum has also created two floating museums, the “Evangelistria” and the “Thales of Miletus”.
