About the museum
After the founding of the Greek state, the numerous finds from Delos and from the necropolis of Rheneia made it necessary to create a museum on Mykonos, to gather and protect the antiquities of the neighbouring islands. Initially the funerary stelae, inscriptions and statues were housed in rented private houses.
In 1898 the Municipality of Mykonos made available a plot at the site of Kaminaki for the construction of a public archaeological museum. Construction began in 1899, the building was completed in 1902 and acquired its final Cycladic form in 1934, so that the museum is among the oldest in the country.
In the late 1960s the museum was extended and the display of the antiquities from Rheneia was reorganised. Only a few finds from Mykonos itself are shown, such as objects from the prehistoric sites of Ftelia, Diakofti and Angelika, as well as the famous Pithos of Mykonos. The Ephorate of Antiquities of the Cyclades and the Municipality of Mykonos have initiated the extension and re-display of the museum.
