About the museum
Delos is a tiny island of the Cyclades, about five kilometres long. According to myth, Leto gave birth there to Apollo and Artemis, and the island developed into a sacred centre and a refuge for peoples from across the Mediterranean. After being declared a free port by the Romans, Delos became a powerful trading centre where the cults of Greek and foreign gods coexisted. The archaeological site includes the sanctuary of Apollo, the Avenue of the Lions, the theatre and private houses with famous mosaics, such as the House of Dionysos, and has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1990.
The Museum of Delos was built in 1904 at the expense of the Archaeological Society at Athens. The original building had five rooms on the western side, to which further rooms were added in 1931 and 1972.
Today the display occupies nine rooms. In six of them are displayed the sculptures and reliefs found on Delos, one of the finest collections in the world, while the remaining rooms house vessels from the prehistoric to the late Hellenistic period and small objects from the private houses. The original Lions of Delos are kept in the museum, while copies stand on the Avenue of the Lions.
