About the museum
Argos hides many secrets, the most important of which is its theatre, which was regarded as a great architectural achievement of the ancient world. It was hewn into the hillside in the first quarter of the 3rd century BC, held 20,000 spectators and was directly connected with the ancient agora, right opposite. The theatre of Epidaurus, as is pointed out, was not the largest in Argolis.
The Heraion was the ancient religious centre of Argos and lies about 8 kilometres outside the city. According to Homer, it was at this sanctuary that Agamemnon was chosen as commander of the Argives in the Trojan War. The first temple has been completely destroyed; the second, built in the last quarter of the 5th century BC and initially housing a chryselephantine statue of the goddess, survives at foundation level. Despite its unassuming appearance, with its impressive staircase and wide horizon, the Heraion retains traces of the devotion of those who worshipped the stern protectress of Argos.
