About the museum
The Laskarideio Laografiko Mouseio has operated since 1982 in Nea Kios in Argolis and belongs to the Municipality of Argos-Mycenae. Virginia Matseli, a resident of Nea Kios, started the effort when she was preparing a photo exhibition on the final days of life in Asia Minor and found that residents wanted to preserve objects from their homeland. It is named after the historian Efrysthenis Laskaridis, author of the two-volume study “Ta Kiana”, who supported the idea.
The single-storey building, with four rooms, had once housed the community office and the gendarmerie post. It was destroyed by fire during the Greek Civil War and remained unused for years. The Municipality of Nea Kios reorganised the museum in 1996, and the new exhibition opened in 2002. In the courtyard there is a garden with a traditional oven and farm tools.
The exhibition “Keys of Memory – From Askanio in Bithynia to Erasino in Argolis” follows the route of the refugee community through objects. The first room shows garments and objects of silk production, the second the journey from Kios to Nea Kios with documents and photographs, the third church vessels and vestments, and the fourth household items such as cooking utensils, quilts, embroideries and cushions.
