About the museum
Tiryns was a Mycenaean centre with a citadel surrounded by the famous Cyclopean Walls. Already in the 2nd century AD Pausanias wondered about the way they had been built, and the grandeur of the ruins led UNESCO to include the now restored site on the World Heritage List.
The city had been covered over the centuries by layers of sediment and was gradually uncovered from 1884 thanks to the excavations of Heinrich Schliemann. The huge greyish-red boulders gave rise to various theories about the construction of the walls and the myth of the Cyclopes; today it is known that the Mycenaeans were excellent engineers.
Apart from the impressive fortification with its subterranean galleries, visitors see the Western Bastion, one of the highest achievements of Mycenaean architecture, the palace with the throne room, the Lower Citadel and the geometric-archaic temple, of which only the foundations survive.
