About the museum
The ruins of ancient Lerna lie in the area of Mylos, in Argolis. The name is known from mythology, from the struggle of Herakles with the Lernaean Hydra, the mythical monster with nine heads. According to one version of the myth, included among the Twelve Labours of Herakles, the Hydra symbolises the efforts of the inhabitants of Lerna to drain the marshy swamps of their region.
The most important monument of the settlement is the so-called “House of the Tiles”, which dates to the Early Helladic period. Parts of the fortification walls of the settlement also survive on the site.
