About the museum
The collection is housed in the so-called Konaki, one of the most beautiful buildings in Volissos, with traditional and eclectic elements. The three-storey stone-built building was rebuilt in 1868 by the demogerontas (community elder) Sgontzos. It served as a court during Ottoman rule and after the liberation of Chios in 1912, and was bought by the Ministry of Culture in 2000. Its repairs and the exhibition were co-financed by the European Union within the framework of the Third Community Support Framework.
The exhibition on the ground floor tells the story of the famous Ariousian wine in the place of its production. It is divided into three sections: the trade and dispersal of amphorae and cups, the cult of Dionysus, and the vessels used at symposia and at other events of religious and social life. Rich visual material helps visitors understand the production, use and significance of wine for the economy.
