About the museum
The Historical Medical Museum of Chios is a model thematic museum that examines the history of medicine on the island, both through the instruments of medical practice itself and through the organised medical structures of Chios. It operates under the responsibility of the Medical Association of Chios.
The first axis of the exhibition presents medical instruments and devices from private collections and public institutions: the independent “Ioakim Antoniou” and “Michail Volakis” collections, the “Pharmaceutical Collection” and the “General Collection”. The Antoniou collection includes equipment of a medical clinic of the 1920s, while the Volakis collection includes equipment of an ENT clinic, mainly from the 1950s.
The second axis presents the historical course of four major institutions of the island: the leprosarium, with a history of six centuries, the “Skylitseio” Hospital, the National “Michaleio” Orphanage and the “Miltiadis and Zinovia Kokkali” Maternity Hospital. It is supplemented by a brief survey of the first pharmacies of Chios and of trachoma, which afflicted the island from the 19th century until the 1970s.
