About the museum
The museum is housed in the building of the Korais Library and is based mainly on the personal collections of Filippos Argentis. In 1932 Filippos Argentis founded the “Argentis” Society, with the aim of rescuing the folklore and historical material of Chios, such as historical heirlooms and costumes. In 1937 an “Ethnological Museum” opened in a hall of the Chios Gymnasium, and its collection was enriched with donations and purchases.
Later Argentis added a second floor to the library building, to house the folklore collection and the historical and topographical paintings of Chios that he had donated. New rooms were inaugurated in 1962. After his death in 1974, his son Pantelis F. Argentis donated further books and paintings and shaped the museum into its present form.
On the ground floor are displayed busts of the benefactors of the Library, Adamantios Korais and Filippos Argentis, coats of arms of prominent Chiot families, display cases with manuscripts and personal objects of Korais and other personalities, as well as medals, rocks, fossils, books and paintings. The staircase and the upper floor house historical and topographical engravings and watercolours, mainly of the 19th century, while in rooms D and E on the upper floor is the Folklore Collection.
