About the museum
The Chios Maritime Museum was created to honour the island’s long nautical and commercial tradition and to give modern Greek shipping a house-museum in one of its major centres. Its core was the small but valuable collection of the Progressive Educational Union of Vrontados, which was enriched by donations, mainly of ship models and ship fittings.
The museum is housed in the city centre, in the traditional mansion of Anastasios and Maroukô Patera, which was donated by their heirs in 1991. It is a two-storey building from the early 20th century, from the last phase of the island neoclassical style, with characteristic painted ceilings. The interior spaces and the garden have been renovated so that the exhibits are presented in a harmonious setting.
Special weight is given to shipping after the Second World War, with Liberty ships and other types built during the war, which were the beginning of post-war Greek shipping. In the garden there is a monument to the sailors of Chios, Oinousses and Psara who lost their lives in the war. On the first floor there is a library with around 3,500 volumes and a reading room, and the museum organises lectures and publishes the annual periodical “Nautilos”.
