About the museum
The building of the Archaeological Museum of Chios covers 5,084 m² and extends over three storeys. With its exposed concrete, glazed panels and flat roof, it is a characteristic example of Greek architecture of the 1960s. The floors are connected by a lift and marble staircases. In a second building to the east are the cafeteria and two halls for lectures and educational activities, while a small amphitheatre is located in the courtyard.
The last permanent exhibition, entitled “Chios, the seafaring city of Oinopion”, occupied 1,200 m² and presented examples of art and everyday life on the island from the Final Neolithic period to the Roman period. It included finds from the prehistoric settlements, works of the famous Chian school of sculpture, inscriptions, coins, vessels, finds from the great sanctuaries, mosaic floors and grave stelae.
Since 13 May 2024 the museum has remained closed in order to complete its modernisation and organise a new display of antiquities.
