About the museum
The Citrus Museum of the Kambos of Chios has operated since 2008 and presents the history of citrus fruits in the area and their trade. Today it is housed on the ground floor of a mansion, in the Perivoli multi-purpose venue, as a dynamic exhibition space that holds the memories and documents of the Kambos.
Visitors learn about the cultivation of citrus fruits through the seasons of the year, the tools and production methods, and the varieties and peculiarities of the mandarins of Chios. The exhibition also tells the story of the citrus society: the Genoese, the merchants, the growers, the overseers and the lords of the Kambos. The trade process from the early 15th century towards Constantinople and Smyrna is presented, as well as the special packaging and the way in which each fruit was wrapped in paper.
A 23-minute film, in which local residents recount the peak and decline of citrus cultivation, completes the tour of the history of the Kambos, with its distinctive mansions, walls, gardens and the magganos (water-lifting machine).
