About the museum
The Archaeological Museum of Dion is located on the south side of the modern settlement, 500 metres from the entrance to the archaeological park. The present building was erected in 1983 and houses finds that come mainly from the excavations of Dion, the sacred city of the Macedonians at the foot of Olympus.
The halls are organised in sections according to the place of discovery: the urban centre and public buildings of the city, the sanctuaries and the necropolis. On the upper floor, characteristic finds from the slopes and summits of Olympus, ancient Pydna, Ryakia and Ritini are displayed.
On the ground floor are important statues, such as those of Dionysus, Isis and Aphrodite Ypolympidia, as well as finds from Macedonian tombs. A special exhibit is the hydraulis (water organ), the first instrument of its kind found in Greece and the oldest ever found anywhere in the world.
