About the museum
Dion lies on the northern foothills of Olympus and was the sacred centre of the Macedonians. The kings of Macedonia came here to sacrifice to Olympian Zeus, for the ritual purification of the army and to swear oaths of alliance. Philip celebrated his victories here, and from here Alexander the Great set out on his campaign into Asia after games and sacrifices.
In the Roman period Octavian Augustus founded a colony at Dion with settlers from Italy, mainly veteran soldiers. A period of prosperity followed, reflected in the public and private buildings of the city.
The archaeological site covers about 750 stremmata and is the largest in Pieria. The remains span the period from the 5th century BC to the 5th century AD. The lush vegetation and the water give the site the character of a quiet habitat, suitable for visits in every season of the year.
