About the museum
The Olympus Museum of Geological History is located in Leptokarya, at the foot of Mount Olympus, and presents in several halls the rocks, minerals and fossils of the mountain and the wider area. It was created with the contribution of the Department of Geology of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
The exhibition explains how the mountain was formed over time, how glaciers gave Olympus its present shape, how nature erodes it and how caves are formed. With the help of a model of the mountain, the distribution of the rocks is presented, while display cases show all the known rock types of the area. A dedicated section is also devoted to the geological evolution of Greece.
Fossilised plants and animals are also displayed, among them marine organisms found at a height of about 1,000 to 1,500 metres, and minerals mentioned in the “Lithika” of Orpheus. A parallel hall houses works of art on the theme of Olympus and Orpheus.
