About the museum
The Archaeological Museum of Isthmia is located in the sanctuary of Isthmian Poseidon, near the Corinth Canal. It was built in 1970 to designs by the architect Pavlos Mylonas and opened to the public in 1978. The area flourished in antiquity because of its strategic position on the Isthmus.
The collections include finds from the sanctuary of Poseidon and from the sanctuary of Palaimon, from the Hellenistic settlement of Rachi and from the ancient harbour of Kenchreai. Finds are also presented from the Mycenaean cemeteries of the area, from the Roman baths and from the Justinianic Wall.
The most important exhibit is the set of glass inlays from the temple of Isis at Kenchreai, an early form of the much later art of stained glass.
