About the museum

The Historical and Folklore Museum of Corinth was established in 1976 on the initiative of the Corinthian Alkmini Petropoulou-Gartagani. It operates as a legal entity under private law, under the supervision of the Ministries of Culture and of Finance. Its aim is to find, rescue, conserve and present evidence of the history of modern Greece and, above all, of its popular tradition, with objects from the 18th, 19th and 20th century.

The founder envisaged a museum of modern Greece in her birthplace, as Corinth had acquired nothing comparable in the 160 years of its independent life. The building was constructed to designs by the academician Solon Kydoniatis, and the costs were covered mainly by her own funds, with the support of the Ministry of Culture. The documentation of the objects and the permanent exhibition were designed with the contribution of the Benaki Museum, the National Historical Museum, the Museum of Greek Folk Art and the Folklore Centre of the Academy of Athens.

The permanent collections comprise mainly traditional costumes from many regions of Greece, Northern Epirus, Asia Minor and Cyprus, as well as woven and embroidered textiles, silver and goldsmith work, metalwork and wood carving. In specially designed spaces, tools of farm and pastoral life and household objects are displayed, recreating life in the countryside.
