About the museum
The acropolis of Proerna dominates the ancient city, at the north-western edge of Achaea Phthiotis, and occupies the rocky hill of Gynaikokastro. South-east of the city was the sanctuary of Demeter Proernia.
The trapezoidal wall was built in the Hellenistic period of grey limestone and was reinforced with two rectangular towers. The masonry and the technique of the fortification are linked with the successors of Alexander the Great, who claimed dominion over Greece at the end of the 4th and the beginning of the 3rd century BC.
