About the museum
The Archaeological Museum of Milos is located in Plaka and since 1984 has been housed in the neoclassical building known as “Katastimata” (the Shops), made available by the Municipality of Milos. According to tradition, the building was designed by Ernst Ziller.
In the halls of the permanent exhibition, representative finds from various sites on the island are presented in chronological order, reflecting the presence and activity of people on Milos from the Neolithic period to Late Antiquity. In recent years the foyer has also hosted temporary exhibitions.
Among the prehistoric exhibits, the finds from the sanctuary of Phylakopi stand out, above all the striking female figure known as the “Lady of Phylakopi” (mid-14th century BC), a masterpiece of Mycenaean art. Exhibits of the historical period are also significant, such as funerary and votive stelae with inscriptions in the Doric dialect of the 6th century BC. A modern copy of the Venus de Milo, the 1st-century BC masterpiece kept in the Louvre, is also on display.
